Deschutes County, named for the river that slices through the heart of this area, was formed from the western side of Crook County in 1916. The river was originally called Riviere des Chutes, which translates as “River of the Falls.” This centrally located county is bordered by the Cascade Mountains to the west and contains parts of the central high-desert plateau in the east, which provides beautiful, sunny summers and crisply cold winters. Major cities include Bend, Redmond, and Sisters.
For those who would prefer not to play in the wilderness, the area is full of other interesting attractions. High end golf courses dot the land with more than 25 in the area. Along with these are casual to elegant dining establishments, art galleries, museums, summer/winter festivals, and shopping stores galore. Even with so many activities to partake in, Deschutes County is a wonderful place to simply kick up your feet and relax. Check out the Area Information section for more specific area business links.
